comics workout 10/26/2008
friend paul and i have felt extremely out of practice lately when it comes to drawing. i don’t know about him, but i haven’t really sat down to draw something for many many months with any regularity. so it felt good to force ourselves to complete a few drawing-related tasks! i mean, i sucked hard at both of the drawings, but i was just happy to move a pen across a wacom tablet again.
today’s challenge was to take two random wikipedia articles and draw ‘em up. my first click gave me jenna drey, some kind of singer-songwriter lady i guess? a quick google image search gave me a resource image, and i staggered my way to a drawing of it:

on one hand, i would have liked to run over this drawing with some more committed black lines. on the other hand, i would have taken hours to tinker with something like this, and the comics workout necessitates metering one’s drawing on a timer (even a loosely-defined one). like i said earlier, this drawing totally sucks. you can see she has a head and a face and hands in her hair, but the proportions are all off. i complained about this to paul as well, but i also feel like i have no good methods for drawing people’s hair. i should probably get more art books just to see how other people do it.
the next bunch of searches took awhile to yield something that makes sense, but a few clicks later i found a rush song, “beneath, between and behind”. I went more abstract this time, making use of paul’s helpful suggestions regarding how to get more out of my wacom than the default brush settings can afford. I love wet edges, and this pseudo-painting hopefully reflects that. i was tempted to listen to the song first for inspiration, but thought this somewhat literal interpretation of the song title worked well.

we did do one other thing to celebrate a return to comic-making: another witch’s brew! we didn’t quite finish up, but paul will send me the last panel when he finishes, and i’ll link to it then!
hope to do all this again soon some time! right now i’m getting too tired to type without missing a typo, so i’ll quit while i’m ahead. g’night!

the story arcs even further somehow! is that… possible? i will make it possible. that doesn’t really work very well as a phantom menace quote.
story arc time!
apple cow is one of the few characters i seem to have named when i originally drew these pictures back in the eighties. i should probably come up with names for the rest of the gang eventually.
not sure where this will reside just yet, so there’s no better place to talk about it than the site for comics i make that aren’t called zelda comic. a few years ago, i found a bunch of pictures i drew in my youthful days. mostly cows (boy oh boy did i like cows as a kid). i scanned in everything i could find for posterity, and very quickly realized that these would be fun to use as artwork in a clipart comic. fast forward, like, years, and i finally get around to making it happen! please enjoy the probably-ongoing adventures of apple cow and friends!
